MSW Survey

The objective of the campaign was to make the people in the Municipal Colony area aware about the activities going on as well as the importance of it while the survey focussed mainly on the willingness to replace the septic tanks in their area and how much amount each of the households are willing to pay. It also assessed whether the respondents are willing to join the campaign, whether segregation of waste is happening at household level and to know the number/age of people residing in each of the households. The number/age of people in the households was important to get the number of youth in the age group of 10 to 15 and 15 to 25 who will be targetted and will be involved more in the future campaigning activities.

20 MSW students from Assumption College, Changanacherry and 24 Kudumbashree workers from Alappuzha had participated in the survey. Kudumbasree workers were involved since they are familiar with the households in the area.

ODK Collect was used for the survey. Training on how to use ODK Collect app was given for the MSW students at Assumption College on 7/3/2018. MSW Kudumbasree Survey & Campaign was conducted on 10/03/2018 along the Municipal Colony canal in Chathanadu Ward of Alappuzha Municipality. The total number of households covered as part of this survey was 130.

The major findings of the survey are below:

  • 82% of the respondents mentioned the septic tank is working properly in their household, while 15% mentioned it is not working.
  • Only 30% of the respondents were willing to replace the septic tank if found unscientific.
