The students were provided training on FOSS (Free Open Source Software) namely ODKcollect to collect data as part of the household survey and OSM (OpenstreetMap) for tracing the drains and geo-tagging the hot posts of solid / liquid waste dumping. Students were given training on portable water quality assessment kits.
Both OSM and ODKCollect are open source tools, which means these are available for free. These do not need internet to collect information and thus, making them appropriate for field-work. Usage of these tools eliminates the need of paper to collect data and thus, making theses eco-friendly options. These will also help in saving considerable time otherwise needed for the data entry.
